We caught up with 2018 Young ESTEAM Champion of the Year, Xanthe Turner, to hear about what it was like to be recognised at the awards last year...

Describe yourself in one sentence:

I am a curious, animal-loving, entrepreneurial, arts-fanatic, who never leaves the house without a sketchbook.

Why did you get involved in ESTEAM?

I don’t remember ever not being involved with ESTEAM. I’ve been passionate about the arts since I was a baby and have always enjoyed studying things I find interesting. The word ‘science’ encapsulates many of the most fascinating concepts in existence. I honestly can’t imagine living a life without learning.

What does ESTEAM mean to you?

To me, entrepreneurship is about finding further opportunities to focus on my passions in ways that will (hopefully!) enable other people explore their own. It also helps me reach beyond my comfort zone and learn new skills, as they are needed.

As for the arts - I need art in my life more than I need food!

Visual arts, music, theatre, film, and all other art forms are crucial in enabling people to express, explore, and analyse everything of any importance - from emotion, to philosophy, to ethics, to future technologies.

What did winning a 2018 Peel ESTEAM Award mean to you?

Being nominated for the ESTEAM Young Champion of the Year Award meant a lot to me. Not because I won, but because, through that, I was able to meet (and speak with) some really amazing people, who inspired me, and made me feel very proud to be counted as one of them. Attending the awards night really helped me feel a sense of connection and belonging, as well as heightening my appreciation for the incredible community I am lucky enough to live in.

What was your favourite part of the ESTEAM Awards in 2018?

My favourite parts of the award night were listening to the speeches, and getting to meet some really wonderful people.

What advice do you have for someone wanting to get involved in ESTEAM?

The advice I have for anyone wanting to get into ESTEAM is to follow your passions and see where they lead you.
